Happy Michigan Downtown Day!

Saturday, September 26^th is Michigan Downtown Day, which celebrates the commercial, social, and economic importance of downtown and small businesses across the state.

After 45 years of hard work and investment, downtowns across Michigan are stronger, more resilient, and more vibrant than ever. This would have never happened if it were not for the diligent downtown management and ongoing programs of Downtown Development Authorities (DDAs).

While downtowns are on the rise in popularity, the work of a DDA is never finished. Downtown management teams today are striving to ensure the long-term prosperity of our historic downtowns and shopping districts as market conditions continue to evolve.

DDA’s comprehensively manage downtowns to maximize the local economy and create sense-of-place. In Michigan communities, large and small, DDAs help fund significant capital projects and on-going economic development initiatives to improve the quality of life, retain residents, attract talent and encourage and support private reinvestment.  Through strategic planning, partnerships, targeted investments and municipal funding tools like tax increment financing (TIF), DDAs help create vibrant, resilient downtowns by supporting initiatives such as: Infrastructure improvements to streets, sidewalks, lighting, sewer and water; Design of public gathering and parks; Revitalization of vacant and underutilized properties; Mixed-use and middle-housing infill developments; Business recruitment and retention programs; Safety, security and maintenance programs; and Marketing, special events and promotions.

Our Michigan downtowns act as the core of community providing economic, cultural, social, and educational resources and opportunities. Downtowns are the ‘economic engine’ where a high concentration of jobs is located, ideas are exchanged, and entrepreneurs gather. The core helps identify a community and provides a myriad of public gathering spaces and cultural and artistic opportunities. DDA supported revitalization developments, infrastructure projects, and marketing and promotional events benefit not only downtown but also the wider region, providing a vibrant core, ensuring economical competitiveness, and sustainable growth for the community.
