How the MDA Committees Strengthen Michigan’s Downtowns

The MDA’s mission to support vibrant, thriving downtowns across the state is powered by the dedication and expertise of our members. One of the most impactful ways to get involved, and make a difference, is by serving on an MDA committee.

Our committees bring together professionals from across Michigan to collaborate, share insights, and most importantly, move initiatives forward. Whether your passion is advocacy, marketing, events, or education, there’s a place for you to contribute.

Key Points:

  • The MDA has four committees that support Michigan downtowns
  • The Membership and Marketing Committee helps recruit new members, updates member benefits, and works on digital and traditional marketing and promotional pieces.
  • The Legislative Committee works with key partners to advocate and help plan the MDA’s Advocacy Day in Lansing.
  • The Conference Committee creates all aspects for all workshops, conferences, and webinars.
  • The Professional Development Committee maintains the MiPDM certificate program, and supports the MDA podcast, ‘In MI Downtown’.
  • All MDA committees partner on different initiatives throughout the year.

Membership & Marketing Committee

This committee plays a vital role in growing and strengthening the MDA network. Members assist with outreach to past-due members, help refine membership dues and benefits, and actively recruit new members.

In addition, the committee leads promotional efforts across social media, print, and the MDA website, ensuring our organization stays visible and relevant. They also collaborate closely with the Conference Committee to align messaging and outreach efforts.

Legislative Committee

Downtowns don’t operate in a vacuum, they’re shaped by policies and decisions made at the state level. The Legislative Committee serves as MDA’s direct connection to Lansing, monitoring legislation and maintaining relationships with state partners.

This group helps coordinate outreach to legislators, supports planning for Advocacy Day, and provides timely updates at workshops and conferences. Their work ensures MDA members stay informed and prepared to advocate for their communities.

Conference Committee

From dynamic workshops to our annual conference and webinars, this committee is behind it all. The Conference Committee develops engaging programming by securing speakers, organizing sessions, coordinating logistics, and managing sponsors and promotions.

Their efforts create meaningful learning and networking opportunities for downtown professionals across Michigan.

Professional Development Committee

Investing in people is key to strengthening downtowns. This committee leads the development and implementation of the MiPDM (Michigan Professional Downtown Manager) certificate program, helping professionals build skills and advance their careers.

They also review applications, collaborate with the Conference Committee to ensure high-quality educational programming, and manage the “In MI Downtown” podcast, which shares insights and stories from communities across the state.
